The Minister of Labour and Employment for State, Nkiru Onyejiosha, took decisive action on Friday by ordering the immediate shutdown of the Metal Manufacturing Company in Sagamu Local Government, Ogun State. The closure was enforced due to the company’s alleged neglect of safety practices, putting its workers at risk of health hazards.
The Metal Manufacturing Company, located at Gbara near Sotubo, not only manufactures metal products but also batteries. The factory has been accused of failing to provide necessary protective gear for its workers, despite repeated warnings.
Expressing her concern, Minister Onyejiosha emphasized the need for the company to comply with safety regulations, particularly due to its involvement with lead, a hazardous material. She highlighted the workers’ unsafe practices, such as not wearing boots and helmets while handling materials, and emphasized the potential danger to their lives.
In response to the company’s alleged refusal to address safety concerns, Minister Onyejiosha declared the Metal Manufacturing Company prohibited until the management demonstrates a commitment to following the established laws and regulations.
The Director of the Occupational Safety and Health Department at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Mrs. Lauretta Adogwu, along with other ministry staff, proceeded to officially post the prohibition notice at the company’s premises. Workers were subsequently urged to vacate the factory until necessary safety measures are implemented.
This decisive action by the Labour Minister underscores the government’s commitment to prioritizing the well-being of workers and ensuring that companies adhere to safety standards to protect their employees from potential health risks.
