Ganduje Acknowledges Sanusi as Emir of Kano

    Published on

Former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, on Tuesday publicly recognised Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano and Chairman of the Kano State Council of Chiefs.

Ganduje acknowledged Sanusi during the swearing-in ceremony of the new Deputy Governor of Kano State, Murtala Sule Garo, at the Government House, Kano.

During his remarks, the former governor greeted Sanusi and addressed him by his full traditional title, a gesture that drew loud applause from dignitaries and guests at the event.

The development marked the first time Ganduje would openly recognise Sanusi in that capacity since their widely reported fallout.

In 2020, while serving as governor, Ganduje deposed Sanusi as Emir of Kano.

However, Governor Abba Yusuf later reinstated Sanusi and removed Aminu Ado Bayero, whom Ganduje had appointed after Sanusi’s removal.

Ado Bayero, however, refused to relinquish the throne, amid insinuations that he had the backing of Ganduje and the Federal Government, with the matter pending in court.

The emirship dispute had continued to generate tension in Kano, with security agencies previously intervening during traditional activities.

The situation appeared to shift after Governor Yusuf defected to the All Progressives Congress months ago.

Sanusi was subsequently allowed to hold the Sallah Durbar, unlike previous occasions when the police had invited him over violence that broke out during Durbar activities and later banned the event.
