The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Dr. Solomon Arase, has called for assistance from the United States in the area of training and capacity building for the staff of the Police Service Commission and the Nigeria Police Force. During a meeting with the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the United States Department of State, Mr. Tobin J. Bradley, Dr. Arase emphasized the need for specialized training to enhance the skills of the Commission’s staff. He also requested support for the training of police officers on investigative skills and effective prosecution of cases.

Mr. Bradley expressed interest in working with the Commission and promised to explore ways to provide the requested assistance. He acknowledged the need for an effective and efficient police service in Nigeria and highlighted the importance of funding assistance to achieve this goal. Mr. Bradley also mentioned the Department’s willingness to support Police Colleges in Nigeria, such as the Police Academy, to help them achieve their objectives.

The Police Service Commission is particularly seeking assistance in strengthening its recently established Compliance Monitoring Unit, which is responsible for monitoring the effectiveness and efficiency of the Police Complaints Response Unit. In addition to training, the Unit also requires support in terms of equipment provision.

This partnership between the Police Service Commission and the United States Department of State has the potential to enhance the capacity and skills of the Nigerian police force, leading to improved law enforcement and public safety in the country.
