The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has warned that more than 30 states are at risk of severe flooding during the 2026 rainy season. Director-General Zubaida Umar urged governments at all levels to take immediate action, including clearing drainages and waterways, and strengthening emergency response structures.
NEMA has launched a Flood Preparedness and Response Campaign and rolled out a Climate-Related Risk Management Framework to coordinate national efforts. The agency’s Flood Early Warning System identifies high-risk communities and provides vulnerability maps to guide preparedness.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State pledged support, citing the state’s experience with severe flooding in 2025, which left hundreds dead and thousands displaced.
