Honduras striker Alberth Elis is still in an induced coma following a severe head injury sustained during a match with his French club Bordeaux. Elis, 28, was knocked unconscious just 40 seconds into Saturday’s Ligue 2 game against Guingamp when he collided with defender Donatien Gomis while attempting to meet a cross.

While Gomis quickly recovered, Elis received on-field treatment before being rushed to the hospital, where he underwent surgery on Saturday evening. Bordeaux announced that Elis was placed in an induced coma due to a head trauma, and his condition would be closely monitored in the coming days. The club refrained from providing further details on his vital signs and prognosis.

In response to the situation, Bordeaux has initiated a psychological support unit to assist Elis’s teammates and club staff during this challenging period. The Honduras national team and numerous football players and clubs have expressed solidarity and support for Elis through social media messages.

Elis, affectionately known as “La Panterita” (“Little Panther”), has represented Honduras in international football, earning 64 caps and scoring 13 goals since his debut in 2014. Despite the distressing circumstances, Bordeaux managed to secure a 1-0 victory against Guingamp, with midfielder Gaetan Weissbeck dedicating the win to Elis.

Club president Gerard Lopez extended gratitude for the outpouring of support, particularly from rival clubs, for Elis and his family. The statement released by Bordeaux featured a photo of Elis with a caption affirming solidarity with the injured player.

The incident involving Elis adds to a series of similar injuries witnessed in football, including those of Samuel Umtiti, Ronald Araujo, and Petr Cech. These incidents underscore the physical risks inherent in the sport and the importance of player safety measures.
