Backlash Ensues as Akpabio’s Holiday Token Remark Sparks Outrage

Nigerians have expressed their disapproval on social media after Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced that a ‘token’ had been distributed to Senators for their recess, triggering concerns about insensitivity.

On Tuesday, Akpabio revealed that a ‘token’ had been dispatched to lawmakers to facilitate their holiday period. The statement was made following the Senate’s completion of the screening and approval process for President Bola Tinubu’s ministerial nominees. Subsequently, the plenary was adjourned until September 26.

As Akpabio addressed his colleagues before the adjournment, he inadvertently made the statement on live television and before reporters. His announcement that a ‘token’—which many interpreted as monetary compensation—had been provided by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Magaji Tambuwal, for the senators’ holiday, drew swift attention from some principal officers who reminded him of the public nature of the broadcast.

Recognizing his error, Akpabio promptly retracted his statement, clarifying that instead of money, prayers had been distributed to their email inboxes to ensure their safe travels and return.

The incident led to widespread backlash on Twitter, where numerous individuals criticized both the Senate President and the lawmakers for allegedly prioritizing personal gains over the nation’s hardships and struggles. The episode highlighted concerns about the perceived disconnection between the country’s leaders and its citizens during challenging times.
