In a tragic incident, Mr. Augustine Izekor, an employee of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), lost his life in a fatal electrocution accident while on duty. The incident occurred on October 26, 2023, during the disconnection of power supply in Evbodia Community, located in Oredo, Edo State.

Upon receiving the report, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) swiftly responded by initiating an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. An Accident Investigation Team (AIT) has been assembled to thoroughly examine both the immediate and underlying factors that led to the unfortunate incident.

In compliance with regulatory requirements, BEDC promptly notified NERC about the accident. The Commission’s leadership has reached out to the wife of the deceased, extending their condolences and assuring her that compensation measures will be taken by the electricity distribution company.

NERC remains steadfast in its commitment to prioritize public safety within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry. The Commission adheres to a zero-tolerance policy for accidents and assures the public that the matter will be handled in accordance with established safety codes and regulations.

This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the inherent dangers faced by electricity workers while carrying out their duties. It highlights the importance of maintaining rigorous safety protocols and continuously improving safety standards in the electricity sector.

As the investigation unfolds, NERC will diligently work towards identifying any lapses or negligence that may have contributed to the accident. The findings will help prevent similar incidents in the future and ensure the well-being of all electricity workers across the nation.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission will closely monitor the progress of the investigation and take appropriate actions to enforce safety measures, holding accountable any party found responsible for any lapses in safety protocols.
