The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has called on judges to safeguard national laws in the face of the digital era’s challenges and opportunities. He emphasized the need to address the ethical and legal aspects of technological advancements while maintaining transparency, fairness, and due process.

Justice Ariwoola made these remarks during a workshop organized by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for judges on legal issues in telecommunications, themed “The Adjudication Path in a Digital Era.”

He highlighted the complexities brought by the digital revolution and the importance of balancing individual rights, societal responsibilities, and corporate liabilities. Justice Ariwoola stressed that judges must adapt continuously to the evolving nature of technology and ensure that national laws are not eroded by the borderless digital realm.

Furthermore, he urged judicial officers to navigate the complexities associated with digital technologies, maintain public trust and confidence in the judiciary, and strike a balance between advancing technology and safeguarding health.

The workshop’s theme, “The Adjudication Path in a Digital Era,” reflects the current realities faced by judicial officers, as technology has transformed communication, information access, and legal proceedings. Justice Ariwoola emphasized the need to embrace this transformation while upholding the principles of justice.
