The Abia State Government has provided clarification regarding its recent procurement of military vehicles from abroad to enhance security operations within the state.
In response to criticism over the decision not to purchase vehicles from indigenous companies like Innoson Motors and Nord, Governor Alex Otti’s administration defended its choice in a series of Twitter posts by Nedu Ekeke, the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Abia Governor.
Ekeke explained that the decision to acquire vehicles from overseas was made due to urgent military operational requirements. During the launch of ‘Operation Crush,’ a collaborative task force involving the police, army, navy, and other security agencies, 20 Hilux patrol vans were unveiled. While acknowledging the importance of supporting locally manufactured goods, Ekeke pointed out that at the time the vehicles were needed, Innoson did not have the specific type of vehicles required in stock.
Ekeke emphasized that the administration had shown commitment to patronizing locally-made products, exemplified by an initial order of over 50 vehicles from Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company. However, the demand for these vehicles was high, with 20 orders still pending delivery.
He further mentioned that even some commissioners within the government lacked official vehicles, and even the Governor was awaiting the delivery of his official car, still relying on his private vehicles for official use.
Ekeke clarified that the decision to source vehicles from abroad was a result of time constraints, as the urgency of initiating the special security operation took precedence. The government’s primary concern remains ensuring the safety and protection of Abia residents and their property.
The statement highlighted the government’s willingness to engage with feedback and suggestions, underscoring that while the decision was made in the best interest of the state’s security, it does not rule out future collaborations with local brands such as Innoson.
The administration’s commitment to addressing security challenges promptly and effectively remains paramount, with an open-minded approach to considering various perspectives and making informed decisions for the benefit of the state and its citizens.
