The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) have announced their joint decision to investigate the tragic elevator accident that resulted in the death of Dr. Diaso Vwaere at the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos.
Afolabi Solebo, General Manager of LASCOPA, and Babatunde Irukera, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of FCCPC, released a joint statement expressing their deep sorrow over the incident and offering condolences to Dr. Vwaere’s family, friends, colleagues, and the affected community.
In collaboration with relevant agencies and Lagos State Government authorities, LASCOPA and FCCPC have initiated a thorough inquiry to uncover the root cause of the elevator malfunction that led to the unfortunate demise of Dr. Vwaere. The investigation will particularly focus on the service provider responsible for the elevator’s installation and maintenance.
Both regulatory bodies emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety of all facilities, benefitting consumers, patrons, and government establishments. They pledged to work closely with other relevant authorities throughout the investigation process.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has also expressed its condolences to Dr. Vwaere’s family and has established an inquiry team to investigate the elevator accident at the Lagos Island General Hospital, Odan. The inquiry team comprises officials from the Lagos State Ministry of Health, Lagos State Health Service Commission, Lagos State Safety Commission, and certified Lift and Vertical Transportation Equipment experts.
The government assured that appropriate sanctions will be imposed on anyone found responsible for the accident based on the findings of the inquiry report. The joint efforts of LASCOPA, FCCPC, and the Lagos State Government aim to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
