A transformer fault at the Apo Transmission Substation in Abuja has disrupted electricity supply to customers in parts of the nation’s capital, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced in a epstatement signed by Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs.
According to TCN, one of the 100MVA 132/33kV transformers at the substation tripped on differential relay indication at approximately 12:56 a.m. on Thursday, 22nd May 2026, while the equipment was on no load.
Initial inspection pointed to oil spillage around the transformer, but further investigation by TCN’s maintenance crew uncovered a more specific problem — faults with the red and yellow phase 33kV bushings of the affected power transformer.
TCN said the red phase bushing has since been resuscitated, while repair work on the yellow phase bushing remains ongoing.
Pending the completion of full repairs, TCN has requested that the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) reroute supply for customers on the outgoing 33kV feeders connected to the faulty transformer, directing that electricity be sourced from alternative TCN feeders within AEDC’s franchise area.
The development means that customers ordinarily served by the affected feeders at Apo Substation may experience supply interruptions or rerouted service until the transformer is fully restored.
TCN said its engineers are working to complete repairs as quickly as possible and issued an apology to both AEDC and electricity consumers affected by the incident.
