Nigeria’s women’s rugby league team will sharpen their preparations for the upcoming Women’s World Cup qualifying tournament in Canada with a three-match warm-up series against Ghana in Lagos.

The matches, which carry world ranking points, will be staged on Saturday, October 4, at Rugby School Nigeria in Eko Atlantic City, before moving to Alaro City for the fixtures on Tuesday, October 7, and Saturday, October 11.

“Our three weeks of preparation in Nigeria are absolutely vital,” he said.

“It will allow us to train at elite intensity, build cohesion, and ensure every player is ready to compete on the world stage.

This is more than just three games — it’s a statement about the potential of African women in Rugby League.

Playing against Ghana gives us the right kind of test before we face the world’s best.

    Nigerian players, echoed the excitement.
“It’s an honour to be part of Nigeria’s journey on the global stage,” Shearman said.

“Coming to Lagos is not only about preparing for Canada, but also about contributing to the growth of Rugby League in Africa. The talent here is incredible, and I believe Nigeria has the potential to surprise the world.”

Nigeria goes into the series as favourites, having never lost to Ghana in their previous three meetings.

However, Ghana is steadily growing its women’s rugby league programme, with increased female participation, improved technical training, and stronger grassroots development.

“Our players have been working hard, and this series gives them the platform to showcase their talent,” Alibah noted.

“It’s also a powerful opportunity to grow the game and inspire the next generation of Ghanaian girls to dream big in Rugby League.”

The series is backed by Alaro City, the main sponsor and long-term partner of Nigeria Rugby League, which is also constructing a purpose-built Rugby League pitch that will serve as Nigeria’s World Series training camp.
