Indication has emerged that Nigerian embassy in South Africa has been cut off from public power supply due to her inability to pay the electricity bill.

This development was revealed on Wednesday by Ambassador Joe Keshi (Rtd) while fielding questions on Channel television morning program, Sunrise Daily, where the station focused on “Nigeria Foreign Relations.”

“ I was in South Africa in June and visited the embassy, and there was no light, all our houses/buildings had light, but Nigeria’s house has none. You can imagine the disgrace to the country.

Though details of the debt was not disclosed, this development may not be connected to the recent admission by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that lack of funds is affecting effective management of Nigeria’s embassies across the world.

According to him, poor funding of the foreign missions by the Nigerian government has a negative impact on the operations of the mission houses, including the resignation of local staff as salaries are been owed and payments are not being made to the staff.

Ambassador Keshi noted that foreign aid should be seen is an important project, which requires huge resources to maintain.

The retired career diplomat stated that Nigeria’s inability to finance foreign missions exposes the officials and local staff to activities that may not be in the interest of the country.

On the call by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu the United Nations to admit Nigeria into the Security Council, the diplomat noted that the current President Of the United States of America, Donald Trump, may not be favorable to such admission.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently recently that paucity of funds is affecting operations at Nigerian foreign missions but added that efforts are being put in place to sustain critical operations at the embassies.
