In response to concerns regarding human rights violations and corruption, the United States Government has announced a travel ban targeting officials from Uganda.

Under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, the Department of State is taking action to impose visa restrictions on the implicated individuals.

The Biden administration has emphasized its commitment to evaluating further measures within this policy framework.

The officials affected by the ban are accused of engaging in corruption, undermining democratic processes, and perpetrating human rights abuses, particularly against LGBTQI+ individuals.

Uganda recently enacted the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023, which imposes severe punishments, including life imprisonment or even the death penalty, for individuals who identify as Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, or Asexual.

Additionally, the Department of State has revised its travel advisory to alert American citizens about the risks faced by LGBTQI+ individuals or those perceived to be LGBTQI+ when visiting Uganda.

The United States affirms its unwavering support for the people of Uganda and expresses its dedication to promoting respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms both domestically and globally.
