Labour Party (LP) Senatorial candidate for Anambra Central, Amb. Tochukwu Ikezue has expressed worry over poor working condition of teachers despite increasing commitment and sacrifice in the discharge of their responsibilities.
Ikezue who stated this in his message to mark World Teachers’ Day described teachers as nation builders and true heroes of society who mould characters, impart knowledge and give hope and shape the future of our children.
He however regretted what he termed unfair treatment being meted to them including difficult conditions, poor pay, lack of infrastructure and little motivation.
Ikezue promised improved welfare and living wage for all teachers, prompt payment of salaries, allowances and pensions as well as continuous training and retraining for modern teaching methods if voted into power.
He added that his mission in the Senate is also to fight for rehabilitation of dilapidated schools across Anambra Central as well as restoration of dignity to the teaching profession.
The statement reads in part, “On behalf of my family and the Rescue Mission for Anambra Central, I extend my heartfelt congratulations and deep appreciation to all teachers in Anambra Central Senatorial District, Anambra State and across Nigeria.
“You are the true heroes of our society. You mould characters, you impart knowledge, you give hope and you shape the future of our children even when the nation has not treated you fairly. Without teachers, there would be no Doctors, no Lawyers, no Engineers, no Senators, and no President.
“As a product of great teachers myself, I know the sacrifice you make. You teach under difficult conditions, with poor pay, lack of infrastructure and little motivation, yet you remain committed to the future of our children. This is unacceptable.
“As we celebrate this year’s theme: “Valuing Teachers Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education”, I assure you that your voice will be heard in the 11th Senate. Your welfare will be our priority.
“Happy World Teachers’ Day to every teacher in Idemili North, Idemili South, Njikoka, Anaocha, Awka South, Awka North and Dunukofia. You are celebrated. You are valued. You are loved.”
