Go for breast cancer screening, NCS warns Nigerian men

The National Cancer Society (NCS) in Bauchi State has called on Nigerian men to undergo regular breast cancer screening to promote early detection and reduce deaths associated with late diagnosis.
The NCS President, Habiba Ismail, made the appeal on Tuesday in Bauchi, stressing that breast cancer, though more common among women, also affects men, especially those above 30 years.

She explained that early detection through self-examination and professional screening remains critical to successful treatment and survival.
“I attended a medical conference where several men shared their experiences as breast cancer survivors,” she said. “This shows why men must be vigilant and seek medical attention when they notice unusual changes.”

Ms Ismail noted that breast cancer could be hereditary, particularly through the maternal line, and pointed out a possible link between breast and prostate cancers, urging increased awareness among men.
She described the rising cancer burden in Nigeria as a public health emergency, calling for stronger government intervention and community-based campaigns to promote preventive healthcare.

On cervical cancer, Ms Ismail cautioned women against using chemical substances in their private parts, warning that such practices could damage tissues and raise infection and cancer risks.
She further linked the high prevalence of cervical cancer to early marriage and multiple sexual partners, urging women to embrace safer sexual practices and regular medical check-ups.

The oncologist also advocated wider access to the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine for adolescent girls and boys, describing immunisation as a vital step in preventing cervical and related cancers.
“We need collective efforts and sustained grassroots awareness to promote early detection and healthy living across communities,” she said.
