The 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate and former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has declared that Nigeria’s progress does not depend on lofty plans, but on disciplined execution anchored by ethical, capable leadership.
Speaking as keynote speaker at the inaugural Lagos Business School All-MBA Students Conference—with visiting MBA students from Cambridge University’s Judge Business School—Obi addressed the theme ‘Execution as a competitive edge.’ He stressed that brilliant strategies are worthless without action that delivers measurable results.
“Execution is the bridge between ideas and impact. It takes capacity, compassion, character, and commitment to drive disciplined execution that changes lives and economies,” Obi said.
Drawing on global examples, he praised China, India, and Vietnam for translating the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into tangible poverty reduction, lifting hundreds of millions from deprivation. Nigeria, by contrast, he warned, has failed to match these successes: “While others reduced poverty, over 130 million Nigerians slipped into multidimensional poverty—proof of weak leadership and failed execution.”
Obi added that the same dynamic defines the private sector, where visionary boards and responsible management sustain high-performing companies.
He closed with a rallying call for transformative governance: “Nigeria’s destiny will not be changed by promises but by disciplined execution under leaders with integrity and competence. That is what will make a truly new Nigeria possible.”
