Chinese President Xi Jinping has voiced his concerns over tariff and trade wars, stating that they undermine the legitimate rights of all nations, disrupt the global trading system, and negatively affect the international economic order.
Xi made these remarks during a meeting in Beijing with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who is visiting China from April 22 to 24.
He emphasized China’s readiness to collaborate with Azerbaijan in defending the international system—anchored by the United Nations—and to deepen cooperation in law enforcement and security.
“China is prepared to work closely with Azerbaijan to uphold the UN-centered international system and protect global justice and fairness,” Xi stated.
During the visit, the two nations officially established a comprehensive strategic partnership. As part of this new alliance, 20 cooperation agreements were signed under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), covering areas such as legal affairs, green development, the digital economy, intellectual property, and aerospace.
Azerbaijan, which shares borders with Iran, Russia, Georgia, and Armenia, was among the early supporters of China’s BRI—a massive infrastructure and development strategy introduced in 2013 to expand China’s economic and geopolitical influence.
China and Azerbaijan also agreed on a mutual visa exemption for holders of ordinary passports, aiming to encourage broader cooperation and people-to-people exchanges.
Additionally, both nations pledged to boost trade in green and high-quality agricultural goods and to expand cooperation in the renewable energy sector.
