The Need for Policy Frameworks to Address Emerging Challenges

    By Aaior  K. Comfort

In Lagos, Mrs. Joy Akin, a seasoned financial analyst, starts her day consulting an AI-powered application that provides real-time stock market predictions. “AI has transformed how I approach my work,” Akin says. “It analyzes vast amounts of financial data much faster than I could on my own, allowing me to make more informed decisions for my clients.” Despite the efficiency AI brings, Akin worries about the lack of regulation in this space, emphasizing the need for policies to ensure ethical use and data privacy.

AI’s impact extends beyond finance. Doctors in Lagos and Abuja are increasingly relying on AI for precise diagnoses. Dr. Tunde Ogundipe, a cardiologist in Lagos, uses AI to analyze heart scans, detecting irregularities that may indicate potential issues. Dr. Amina Musa, a radiologist in Abuja, employs AI to identify tumors in MRIs and CT scans at earlier stages. Both doctors acknowledge the benefits of AI but stress the importance of establishing regulatory frameworks to safeguard patient data and ensure accountability.

The Growing Role of AI in Nigeria

Nigeria’s enthusiasm for AI is evident across various sectors. In banking and finance, AI is revolutionizing service delivery with chatbots handling customer inquiries, fraud detection systems becoming more sophisticated, and credit scoring models offering personalized products. In healthcare, AI assists in predicting disease outbreaks, optimizing treatment plans, and enhancing diagnostic accuracy.

The government is actively promoting AI integration through initiatives like the National AI Policy, developed by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), aimed at guiding the ethical and responsible deployment of AI technologies.

    The Rise of AI Startups

Nigeria’s tech ecosystem is burgeoning with AI startups. Companies like Kudi.ai and Data Science Nigeria are leading this revolution, creating jobs and attracting significant investments, thus contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth. However, the rapid adoption of AI brings significant challenges that require urgent attention.

    Challenges of AI Adoption

    1. Job Displacement: AI’s automation potential poses a threat to jobs, particularly in low-skilled sectors. A Nigerian Economic Summit Group study predicts that up to 30% of jobs in banking, manufacturing, and retail could be automated in the next decade. This transition could be painful for those lacking skills for the AI-driven economy.

    2. Data Privacy and Security: AI systems rely on vast amounts of data, raising concerns about data breaches and misuse. The lack of robust data protection laws in Nigeria exacerbates these concerns. Unauthorized data collection by AI-powered apps and potential cyberattacks underscore the need for stronger cybersecurity measures.

    3. Widening the Digital Divide: AI benefits are often concentrated in urban areas, leaving rural communities behind. This disparity could deepen socio-economic inequalities and limit access to AI-driven innovations that could improve lives.

    4. Ethical and Regulatory Challenges: Bias in AI algorithms and the need for a clear regulatory framework are significant concerns. Without proper guidelines, AI could perpetuate societal biases and lead to privacy violations.

The Urgent Need for Policy Frameworks

The need for robust policy frameworks was highlighted at the ICT Growth Conference 4.0 in Lagos, which focused on AI’s impact on national development. NITRA Chairman, Mr. Chike Onwuegbuchula, emphasized the importance of integrating AI into the school curriculum to prepare future generations for the AI-driven job market.

Dr. Oluseyi Akindeinde, Founder of Hyperspace and NeuRal, and Adesola Akinsanya, President of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association, stressed the importance of policy frameworks, regulation, and collaboration in mitigating AI’s negative effects and ensuring equitable distribution of its benefits.

    The Road Ahead

As Nigeria embraces AI, strategic planning, ethical considerations, and inclusive growth are paramount. While AI has the potential to drive economic growth and improve public services, its benefits can only be fully realized through robust policies and regulations. Collaborative efforts between stakeholders, government agencies, and the private sector are essential to create an environment conducive to responsible AI adoption. By addressing these challenges, Nigeria can harness AI’s transformative power for a more equitable and prosperous future.
