In a recent interview with Arise Television, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo, conveyed the acceptance of Bola Tinubu as the constitutionally elected President of Nigeria by the Igbo community. Iwuanyanwu urged for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the deposed Indigenous People of Biafra, emphasizing that Kanu’s continued detention was viewed as “unconstitutional” by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
IPOB contends that self-determination aligns with international laws, citing support from the United Nations and the Africa Union Charter, and calls for a referendum. However, Iwuanyanwu, in consultation with the Igbo people, expressed the belief that Tinubu’s presidency could contribute to Kanu’s release and foster peace in the South-East region.
The Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo leader highlighted that Kanu’s imprisonment was being exploited by criminals who engaged in activities detrimental to the region’s security. He emphasized the negative impact of the sit-at-home orders on business and general livelihood in Igbo land, proposing that Kanu’s release could restore normalcy.
Iwuanyanwu called upon Tinubu, recognized as the Igbo people’s accepted president, to address the challenges faced by the region. He conveyed optimism that Tinubu would respond positively to the plea for Kanu’s release, distinguishing between those genuinely supporting Kanu and criminals taking advantage of the situation.
Regarding the Supreme Court’s verdict on Kanu’s terrorism trial, Iwuanyanwu indicated that the focus was on appealing to President Tinubu rather than the judiciary. He expressed confidence that the president would consider the collective voice of the Igbo community and take appropriate action.
In summary, Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo’s leader stands in support of Tinubu’s presidency, urging proactive measures for Kanu’s release and addressing the challenges faced by the Igbo people in the South-East region.
