Fashola Asserts: Tinubu’s Intervention Unnecessary in Ondo and Rivers Political Crisis

Former Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN), has expressed the view that President Bola Tinubu’s intervention is not required in the ongoing political crises in Ondo and Rivers states. Fashola emphasized the need for Nigerians to focus on amending their ways rather than seeking constitutional amendments, speaking at the Nigerian Air Force Officers Mess Honorary Members Forum (HMF) 2023 Annual Lecture in Lagos.

During the lecture on “Leadership – Leading the Change,” Fashola highlighted that despite calls for constitutional amendments, the key lies in self-amendment. He argued that the constitution clearly outlines procedures for addressing situations, and individuals should adhere to their designated roles.

Fashola questioned the necessity of presidential intervention in the Ondo and Rivers political situations, pointing out that the Constitution does not assign such a role to the President. He challenged those advocating for presidential involvement to consider whether the Federal Government, and the President by extension, were not already perceived as too powerful and infringing on state governments’ powers.

In reference to the Ondo case, Fashola commended blue-blood Ondo indigenes who intervened in pursuit of law and constitutionality, leading to the restoration of calm after the governor’s letter. However, he noted that such individuals were a minority. He urged leadership in Rivers state to take necessary actions to address the situation.

Fashola’s stance underscores the importance of adhering to constitutional provisions and encourages self-reflection and responsible leadership at the state level without relying on external interventions.
