Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf is taking proactive measures to resolve the ongoing certificate issue affecting state-sponsored students studying in Cyprus. Many of these students have been unable to access their academic certificates due to unresolved financial obligations left by the previous administration.
According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa, Yusuf recently held a meeting with the management of Near East University in Cyprus to address the problem.
Tofa revealed that the discussions focused on delays in the release of certificates for students who graduated between 2015 and 2019. Many of these graduates, especially those in Medicine and Nursing, have been unable to advance their careers due to unpaid tuition fees by the previous administration under Abdullahi Ganduje.
Yusuf described the situation as a major setback for both the students and the state. He noted that the lack of skilled professionals in vital sectors like healthcare has impacted the state’s ability to access necessary expertise.
Following what he called “fruitful discussions” with the university’s management, Yusuf expressed confidence that the financial issues would soon be resolved to allow the release of the outstanding certificates.
“This situation has been a significant setback for our children, hindering their dreams and aspirations, as well as affecting our state, which is in dire need of their expertise,” Yusuf remarked.
Criticizing the previous administration, Yusuf said, “It is a shame on him that Ganduje, as governor, could not pay for the tuition of these medical students who are much needed for immediate employment by the Kano State government.”
Reaffirming his administration’s priorities, Yusuf stated, “We remain committed to prioritising education and the welfare of our people as a foundation for sustainable growth.”
The move highlights Yusuf’s focus on addressing longstanding issues and improving educational opportunities for Kano’s youth.
