U.S. Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Molly Phee, has detailed the key topics that Secretary of State Anthony Blinken will discuss with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu during their upcoming meeting next week. Phee highlighted the focus on addressing internal security challenges in Nigeria, including the threat posed by ISIS-WA, Boko Haram, and bandits. The discussions will also extend to regional security issues in the Sahel and coastal West Africa, with planned talks in Cabo Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, and Angola.
The agenda will further cover broader topics such as artificial intelligence, an African seat on the Security Council, and Security Council reform. Phee underscored the trip’s goal to follow up on commitments made during the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit in December 2022, with a specific emphasis on economic partnerships, health collaborations, and diplomatic engagements.
Expressing optimism about the trip’s positive impact, Phee aims to showcase the progress and capacity of African nations, particularly the youth. Addressing a recent military incident in Kaduna, Phee clarified it as an operational error, commending Nigeria’s transparent response and ongoing dialogue on issues such as protecting civilians, human rights, and accountability.
During the visit, Blinken is expected to engage in discussions covering various aspects of cooperation, including economic ties, health partnerships, and diplomatic engagements. The focus will be on highlighting positive developments and contributions to progress in Africa.
