    Shortage of ballot papers: Resilient voters protest forces INEC to shift election in Yenagoa LGA to Sunday

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has postponed the Presidential and National Assembly elections in Yenagoa, which held across the nation on Saturday to Sunday.

    INEC announced the postponement in a statement issued Saturday night and signed by Mr Wilfred Ifoga, Head of Voter Education and Publicity.

    The affected Registration Areas are, Epie I and Epie III, Gbarain II and Okordia.

    INEC claimed that the election could not hold in the four Registration Areas because the process was disrupted.

    However,  investigations showed that there was an acute shortage of ballot papers in the area which prompted voters to stage a protest at INEC office in Yenagoa.

    When our reporter visited the Registration Area Centre at St Peters area Yenagoa on Saturday morning, officials of INEC discovered a wide shortfall of ballot papers for the area with a voting population of 50,000 but discovered that only 1,500 ballot papers were dispatched to the area.

    The security men had fired warning gunshots to disperse the crowd to no avail as the defiant protesters insisted that it was their civic right to vote.

    Appeals by the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Bayelsa , Mr Alex Hart and Commissioner of Police who addressed the crowd fell on deaf ears as they occupied the INEC office
    .
