The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the promotion of 952 Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), while declining to elevate 179 others found to be retired, deceased, or otherwise ineligible.
In a statement on Wednesday, PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani, explained that 176 of the affected officers had already left the service on retirement, while three were confirmed dead before the promotion exercise.
According to Ani, the decision reflects the Commission’s commitment to due process and merit-based career advancement in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
Some of the newly promoted officers include: Maidawa Yakubu, Edwin Thomas, Chagga Yakubu, Sabo Hassan, Omini Dickson, Bassey Alobo, Enyinnaya Ejimadu, Grace Okon, Rose Bassey, Fidelis Offorbuike, Adamu Isa Audu, and Ofem Uket.
Others are: Elvina Ochia Chukwu of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (Special Fraud Unit, Ikoyi, Lagos), Kyrian Igwe of Enugu State Command, Ndidiamaka Onwude of Ebonyi State Command, Rosemary Obianuju Egbo of Delta State Command, as well as Tabitha Gotan, Uya Bassey Johnson, Elizabeth Ajik, Sunday Prince Ajaegbu, and Deborah Danjuma.
Also on the list are: Olowu Yetunde Olatunde of Ogun State Command, Felix Okpaleke of Abakaliki, Zakka Bulus of FCT Command, Kudirat Elegba of Lagos, Isioma Omodion of Delta State Command, Ukpabio Ayi Akiba of Rivers State Command, and Edna Emeh Bassey.
PSC Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Hashimu Argungu, stressed that the Commission would not condone irregularities in promotion exercises.
“The commission will no longer tolerate diversionary or unauthorised actions by serving officers. We have established channels for complaints, and we will ensure promotions are based strictly on merit and eligibility,” Argungu said.
He added that the PSC remains committed to ensuring discipline, fairness, and professionalism in officers’ career progression and has already communicated its decision to the Inspector-General of Police for implementation.
