PDP Faces Obstacles in Plans to Appoint Saraki as Chairman

Efforts by key stakeholders within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to enlist former Senate President Bukola Saraki as the party’s national chairman and revive its fortunes appear to have encountered difficulties.

The PDP has been grappling with internal crises before, during, and after the general elections. Following the party’s loss to President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the presidential election, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, the party’s National Chairman, was replaced in an acting capacity by Umar Damagum, the deputy national chairman (North).

In an attempt to address the party’s challenges, some critical stakeholders convened in Abuja last week to brainstorm on strategies for revitalizing the party. One of their proposed plans was to appoint Saraki as the party’s chairman due to his influence and reach within and outside the country.

However, a reliable source revealed that certain associates of the former governor of Kwara State, who were aware of the plan, met in Abuja and expressed opposition to the idea. They argued that while Saraki had played a role in rejuvenating the party by convincing former members who defected to the APC to return, the previous leadership had undermined the party through personal conflicts and self-interests. As a result, they believed that bringing Saraki on board would require starting the revival process anew.

Additionally, the PDP has yet to reach a decision regarding the G-5 governors who contributed to the party’s failure in the presidential election. Various party organs, including the National Working Committee, the Board of Trustees, and a special committee known as the Select committee, have held meetings to address this issue. However, the National Executive Council meeting, where a decision regarding the G-5 governors and other party problems is expected to be made, has not been scheduled.

The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Debo Ologunagba, stated that the speculation surrounding Saraki’s potential appointment was outside the knowledge of the party. He emphasized that the PDP could not comment on such matters as they were in the realm of speculation.
