The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has launched a sensitisation campaign in Gombe to raise awareness about the benefits of tax reform bills, security awareness, and ethical practices. The campaign, which took place on World AIDS Day, also addressed the challenges posed by the “get-rich-quick” syndrome.
Represented by Yusuf Kobi, Director of Planning Research and Statistics, NOA Director-General Lanre Issa-Onilu emphasized the importance of taxation for national development. He acknowledged that multiple taxation has burdened many Nigerians, particularly low-income earners. To address this, the government is implementing reforms to create a fairer tax system.
Issa-Onilu outlined the four key tax reform bills designed to streamline Nigeria’s taxation laws. These include a Tax Bill that consolidates all major taxes and repeals 11 outdated laws. The reforms aim to reduce tax burdens on low earners, introduce new digital systems for easier payments, and ensure that all citizens contribute fairly.
Additionally, Issa-Onilu warned against unethical practices driven by economic hardship and stressed the importance of embracing integrity, hard work, and government initiatives.
Gombe State NOA Director, Adaline Waye-Patari, also spoke about the need for collaborative efforts to address the country’s challenges and highlighted how fair taxation can contribute to national development.
