In a significant stride towards enhancing criminal justice administration, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the successful prosecution of a staggering 29,052 criminal cases nationwide over the past year. This achievement was revealed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Tuesday, March 26, highlighting marked improvements in the justice system.
Of the total cases prosecuted, Adejobi noted that 17,676 have been conclusively dispensed with, while 11,376 cases are still undergoing trial. Furthermore, 51 cases are currently under appeal at appellate courts across the country.
Impressively, out of the dispensed cases, 16,200 cases resulted in the conviction of suspects, who received various forms of punishments for their criminal activities, serving as a stern reminder to all wrongdoers that justice will prevail.
Adejobi issued a stern warning to criminals, urging them to cease their unlawful activities, as the relentless pursuit of justice by law enforcement will eventually catch up with them.
Additionally, the FPRO disclosed that 1,476 individuals have been discharged at the discretion of the jury. However, some of these discharged cases have been appealed by the Police to ensure justice prevails.
The statement attributed this outstanding achievement to the dedication and diligence exhibited by investigative officers, along with the collaboration of legal teams in commands and formations nationwide. The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, commended the commitment and professionalism of field and supervisory officers and legal teams, expressing gratitude to the judiciary, legal practitioners, and stakeholders for their support in the pursuit of justice.
The Inspector General reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s unwavering commitment to upholding the principles of justice and playing its due role effectively in the criminal justice system.
