In a disappointing turn of events, Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has announced his withdrawal from Wimbledon due to a wrist injury. This news comes a year after Kyrgios captivated the tournament as he finished as the runner-up against Novak Djokovic.

Expressing his sadness, the 28-year-old took to Instagram to share the unfortunate update. Kyrgios revealed that he had injured his wrist while preparing to compete in Mallorca last week, ultimately leading to his withdrawal from Wimbledon.

Kyrgios had already been a doubt for the tournament due to his ongoing recovery from knee surgery, which has limited his participation to just one match in 2023. Despite his best efforts to regain fitness after the surgery and return to the prestigious Wimbledon courts, Kyrgios experienced wrist pain during his comeback in Mallorca. As a precautionary measure, he underwent a scan that revealed a torn ligament in his wrist.

“I tried everything I could to be able to play, and I am disappointed to admit that I simply didn’t have enough time to manage it before Wimbledon,” Kyrgios shared. However, he expressed gratitude for the support of his fans and reassured them that he would be back.

Kyrgios was scheduled to face wild card David Goffin in the first round at the All England Club on Monday. Instead, a lucky loser from the qualifying rounds will take his place in the draw.

Earlier on Sunday, Kyrgios, who has played only one match in 2023 during the Stuttgart tournament, described his battle to regain full fitness as “brutal.”
