The management of the University of Ibadan has announced that the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has approved loan applications for 3,283 students. Although the funds have yet to be disbursed, the institution’s Registrar, G.O. Salisu, issued an internal memo on Wednesday confirming the approval.

The memo directed heads of departments to allow students whose loans were approved to sit for the first-semester examinations for the 2023/2024 academic session. Despite the delayed disbursement, the list of affected students has already been shared with the departments for compliance.

This development follows protests by University of Ibadan students over a recent tuition fee hike endorsed by the institution’s governing council. The protests began after a circular was issued last week, urging students to complete their registration before the first-semester exams, with the fee increase affecting both newly admitted and returning students.
