The African Policy and Research Consortium (APRC) has urged President Bola Tinubu to nominate former President Goodluck Jonathan for the position of United Nations Secretary-General.
In a statement on Thursday, APRC Convener, Prof Edward Agbai, said Jonathan possesses the experience and leadership qualities required for the world’s highest diplomatic office.
Agbai said the United Nations needs a leader with proven executive experience, democratic credentials and the ability to manage complex global challenges.
He said Jonathan’s tenure as Nigeria’s Vice President from 2007 to 2010 and President from 2010 to 2015 demonstrated his capacity for responsible leadership.
The consortium described Jonathan’s acceptance of defeat in the 2015 presidential election as a landmark contribution to democratic governance in Africa.
It said the peaceful transfer of power strengthened Nigeria’s democracy and reflected Jonathan’s commitment to constitutional order and national stability.
According to APRC, Jonathan has continued to promote democracy, peacebuilding and conflict resolution across Africa since leaving office.
It noted his election observation and mediation assignments under the African Union, ECOWAS, COMESA, IGAD and the West African Elders Forum.
The consortium said Jonathan had earned international respect for engaging political actors through dialogue, consultation and consensus-building.
It argued that such qualities are essential for a UN Secretary-General expected to mediate conflicts and strengthen multilateral cooperation.
APRC said Jonathan’s experience governing Nigeria’s diverse population provides him with a unique understanding of global development, security and environmental challenges.
The group also said an African candidate would strengthen the continent’s influence in international decision-making and global governance.
It urged the Federal Government to begin diplomatic consultations with African countries and other international partners to build support for Jonathan’s candidacy.
The consortium acknowledged that the selection process would require extensive international backing but said every successful campaign begins with identifying a credible candidate.
APRC maintained that Jonathan’s record of democratic leadership, regional diplomacy and peaceful conflict resolution makes him a strong contender for the position.
