The Plateau State House of Assembly has formally withdrawn the bill seeking to provide allowances as pension for former members, principal officers and presiding officers of the Assembly, following extensive consultations, public feedback and various concerns expressed by stakeholders.
According to a statement issued by the Chairman, House committee on Information, Plateau State House of Assembly, Dr Kwarpo Mathew Sylvanus, the decision was announced on Wednesday by the Majority Leader of the House and Chairman of the Joint Committee on Rules and Business, Finance and House Services, Hon Joseph G. Gokum.
Gokum said the decision followed careful consideration of the concerns raised by civil society organisations (CSOs), labour unions, and concerned citizens of Plateau State, stressing that the House had listened attentively to the views and submissions made by stakeholders on the matter.
He explained that the 10th Plateau State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Rt Hon Naanlong Daniel, remained committed to the principles of transparency, accountability and people-centred legislation, stressing that the views of stakeholders were important in shaping laws that reflect the aspirations and realities of the people.
According to him, the Assembly acknowledged and respected the position of stakeholders, particularly given the prevailing economic realities and expectations of Plateau citizens.
He noted that lawmakers, as representatives of the people, have a responsibility to ensure that legislation promotes equity, fairness and the overall welfare of citizens, including workers and pensioners who have devoted years of service to the state.
Gokum said, “In view of the foregoing, and after due deliberation by the Joint Committee, we have resolved to withdraw the bill.”
He described the decision as a demonstration of maturity, humility and respect for public opinion, adding that constructive engagement between the legislature and the people remains essential to a healthy democracy.
The Majority Leader, on behalf of the Joint Committee and the entire House, expressed appreciation to CSOs, labour unions and all Plateau citizens who engaged constructively on the matter, noting that their vigilance and participation contribute significantly to strengthening democratic governance.
He reaffirmed that the Plateau State House of Assembly, under the leadership of the Speaker remains committed to enacting laws that promote good governance, unity, accountability and sustainable development in Plateau State.
