The Lagos State Government has reopened Alaba International Market and certain markets within the Trade Fair Complex in Ojo, Lagos, following a temporary closure due to improper waste disposal and environmental infractions.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, explained that the decision to reopen the markets came after most of the environmental issues had been addressed. He emphasized that the closure was not politically motivated but was aimed at ensuring a clean and healthy environment around these business facilities.

Wahab stated, “The decision to reopen the markets follows a rigorous assessment and implementation of stringent environmental standards. These standards were established to ensure that businesses in the state operate in a manner that does not harm the environment and the well-being of people.”

He also clarified that the closure was not driven by ethnic or political motives but was done to promote cleanliness and environmental sustainability for the benefit of all residents.

The Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, highlighted the importance of markets operating in an economically viable and environmentally responsible manner. He listed various standards that markets must adhere to, including proper containment of waste, procurement of bins, engagement of bin keepers, zero tolerance for open burning and waste dumping in drainage channels, and the eradication of street trading on roads.

Gbadegesin called on residents and business owners to show commitment to environmental sustainability by adhering to environmental laws and practicing proper waste disposal, to prevent future closures that could impact business activities negatively.
