‎There may be an outbreak of cholera and other communicable diseases at the Kubwa General Hospital, Abuja, if adequate sanitary measures are not taken in the hospital environment.

‎Sources close to the Daily Newscraft revealed a very unsavory development where part of the hospital stinks as a result of unhealthy and poor sanitary conditions.

‎A place of particular concern is the ENT Consulting Clinic and the Medical Outpatient Department (MOP), where the bad smell emanates from the toilets in-between the ENT Consulting Clinic and MOP.

‎There is palpable fear that patients, who visit the hospital for normal consulting clinic, would go home with fresh diseases, owing to the foul air they breathed from the contaminated toilets.

‎This disgusting and unhealthy situation was confirmed by one of the nurses on duty who pleaded for anonymity. She claimed that both nurses and patients have complained of the dirty environment for some time, but no serious attention was given to the issue by the relevant authority. “It has been like this for months. And patients are so many, everyone inhaling rubbish from the broken suck away facility in the hospital.

‎”Every time, officials from Ministry of Health would come for inspection, and yet they don’t take any action. Even tables in the consulting rooms for doctors are broken down, no repairs. Even the ones that are due for replacement, nobody is doing anything about them,” said the senior nurse who has spent several years in the hospital.

‎She further revealed that Kubwa General Hospital is one of the most expensive health facilities in Abuja.

‎”They charge patients so much without giving them value for their money.  Nobody knows what they are doing with the money. The hospital is in such a terrible state that patients wonder if they have not seen the last of the glorious days of Kubwa General Hospital Abuja”, another patient who was disturbed by the smell retorted.

‎Few days ago, over 40 people died of cholera outbreak in Borno State while about 3,000 others were infected.

‎The disease according to reports, affected seven Local Government Areas spreading across 139 communities between May 1 and 28, 2026. Some eye witnesses’ account believe the death toll may be higher as some patients died at home. Although treatment centres were initially overwhelmed, with patients on bare floors, the state government has stepped in by providing drugs, consumables, and hygiene materials.

‎Governor Babagana Zulum had directed quick distribution of the drugs to health facilities.

‎At the Kubwa General Hospital, efforts to reach the chief medical director, Dr Emmanuel Musa proved abortive as he was said to be out of town.

‎Medical experts are concerned that families are losing their loved ones to such a preventable disease due to poor sanitation.

‎Other causes of the disease include contaminated reservoir water and open defecation.

‎Also, overcrowded treatment centers risk secondary infections among patients while fear of hospital care delays may fuel the rising cases of deaths at home.

‎Governments at various levels have launched awareness campaigns and distributed Wash materials, but sustained clean water access remains critical to a lasting solution.
