FCT teachers suspend strike following Wike’s ₦5bn intervention

The State Wing Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has suspended its ongoing strike action involving primary and secondary school teachers with immediate effect.

The SWEC Chairman, Abdullahi Shafa, disclosed this on Sunday at a news conference in Gwagwalada, Abuja.

Shafa said the decision was reached after an emergency meeting convened to assess the intervention of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, in the industrial dispute, which began on April 20, 2026.

According to him, the council reviewed the minister’s commitments and resolved to suspend the strike in the interest of students and the education sector.

The union revealed that the minister had approved a monthly financial commitment of ₦5 billion to address teachers’ welfare and outstanding entitlements.

“The minister approved the release of N2 billion monthly from FCT Internally Generated Revenue, plus ₦3 billion from the 10 per cent IGR accruing to the Area Councils, to implement the 40 per cent peculiar allowance and settle outstanding entitlements of primary school teachers,” Shafa said.

On career progression, Shafa noted that the minister had pledged to engage the Chairman of the FCT Civil Service Commission to address lingering promotion issues affecting teachers.

He said the plan includes removing the vacancy requirement for promotions and reviewing the 2024 promotion exercise.

Following the resolution, the union directed all primary and secondary school teachers in the FCT to return to classrooms.

“Arising from the stakeholders’ resolution, the council has directed all FCT primary and secondary school teachers to resume duties on Monday, April 27,” he said.

Shafa cautioned against any form of victimisation of teachers who participated in the strike, stressing that the union would not tolerate punitive actions.

He added that the council would reassess its position if the FCT administration fails to implement the agreed terms.

The NUT leadership commended teachers for their solidarity throughout the strike and reaffirmed its commitment to improving their welfare and working conditions.

The suspension of the strike is expected to restore normal academic activities in public primary and secondary schools across the Federal Capital Territory.
