Ahead of the October 27 governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, the Chairman of the Screening Committee, Hon. Abdulraheem Olawuyi, has declared that none of the four aspirants will be granted special consideration in the contest for the party’s ticket.
Olawuyi made this known on Tuesday after the inauguration of the Screening and Appeal Committees at the APC national secretariat in Abuja.
The inauguration was conducted by the Deputy National Organising Secretary of the party, Nze Chidi Duru, who charged the committees to carry out their duties with diligence, fairness, and strict adherence to party guidelines and electoral laws.
The governorship hopefuls include the incumbent governor, Biodun Oyebanji; Abimbola Olawunmi, Pro-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka; Kayode Olubunmi Ojo; and Omolayo Oluremi.
Addressing reporters, Olawuyi — who also chairs the House Committee on the North Central Development Commission — explained that the panel’s task is to thoroughly verify documents submitted by each aspirant to ensure that only credible and qualified candidates participate in the primary.
He stressed that the APC could not afford to field a candidate that might cause embarrassment at the polls.
Dismissing suggestions that the committee might favour the incumbent governor, Olawuyi insisted that no one had attempted to influence the panel.
“We have been given clear guidelines by the party, and that is what will guide us. There is no special consideration for anyone,” he maintained.
According to the screening schedule, Governor Oyebanji is expected to appear before the committee today at 10 a.m., followed by Olawunmi at noon. On the following day, Ojo will be screened at 10 a.m., while Oluremi is slated for 12 pm.
