CAF Denies Date Change, Returning to June 3 for Super Falcons vs. Cameroon Friendly

    Published on

The international friendly between Nigeria’s Super Falcons and Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses has been rescheduled to Tuesday, June 3, and will take place at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta.

The match was initially shifted to Monday, June 2, by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), citing logistical challenges and an agreement with the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT). However, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) declined to approve the change, forcing a return to the originally approved date.

The Super Falcons confirmed the revised schedule via their official 𝕏 account on Sunday, May 31, stating that the match will now proceed on Tuesday following a late request from FECAFOOT.

The fixture has already seen disruptions. Originally planned as a two-legged tie, the first leg — set for Saturday, May 31 at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne — was called off after the Cameroonian team arrived late on Friday night, leaving insufficient time for pre-match protocols and recovery.

After the first leg’s cancellation, both teams aimed to move the remaining match to June 2, but CAF insisted on keeping it on June 3 as initially scheduled.

The Cameroonian team has since arrived in Ijebu Ode and is currently training for Tuesday’s clash in nearby Abeokuta.

This match will be the Super Falcons’ first outing since their narrow 1–0 defeat to France in a friendly last November and serves as part of their build-up to the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Although Cameroon failed to qualify for WAFCON 2024, the fixture renews a historic West African rivalry. Nigeria has had the upper hand in recent encounters, with Cameroon goalless in their last six meetings and without a win over Nigeria since 2012.
