Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has said that the 2027 electioneering season will not slow down legislative work at the National Assembly.
Speaking weekend in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, Akpabio said lawmakers were elected for a four-year term and must deliver on that mandate regardless of political activities.
He spoke to newsmen at the Presidential wing of the Victor Attah International Airport after hosting a meeting of All Progressives Congress (APC) critical stakeholders in Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District.
At the meeting, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Akpabio and Governor Umo Eno, secured unanimous endorsement for 2027.
In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, Akpabio said there is a clear separation between campaign and legislative duties.
”We are elected for four years and we are going to work for four years. Anybody that is walking on the tiny rope must be able to do the balancing act. Campaigns can be fixed in the afternoons or evenings while we do our work in the mornings,” he said.
The Senate President dismissed fears that politics will cripple lawmaking, noting that not all members will campaign at once due to party differences.
”It is not a problem at all. It is not everybody that will go for campaign at the same time because we belong to different political parties.
”Nothing will affect legislation. We will continue to make laws to take care of the needs of the people. It has never affected the work of the parliament,” Akpabio stressed.
