The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has launched a nationwide grassroots drive to expand women’s participation in party structures and elective offices ahead of 2027.
National Speaker of the SDP Women Parliament, Ambassador Hajiya Sa’adatu Abdullahi, issued the charge at a strategic meeting of national and state women leaders in Abuja on Sunday.
Abdullahi urged women to build functional units down to the ward level, warning that political power will not be handed to them.
“This meeting gives us an opportunity to assess where we are, identify our weaknesses, strengthen our structures, and develop practical strategies for taking the SDP message to every ward, community, and household,” she said.
“Political success cannot be achieved through wishful thinking but through organisation, sacrifice, strategy, commitment, and effective grassroots engagement.
“Our strength is in our unity, our power is in our organisation, and our weapon is our determination. We must organise, mobilise, and deliver results,” Abdullahi stated.
She commended state leaders who attended at personal expense and urged them to sustain the momentum in their home states.
Representing the SDP National Chairman, Prof Sadiq Gombe, South South Deputy National Chairman, Senator Ugochukwu Uba, said the party is undertaking internal reforms to institutionalise female participation.
“The SDP is committed to giving women their rightful place in political appointments, party activities, and elections,” Gombe said.
He disclosed that the party’s forthcoming manifesto will contain specific policies targeted at inclusion.
Gombe urged women leaders to maintain continuous engagement with female constituents and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to constitutional welfare provisions.
