Following a tightly contested first-leg encounter at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja, where the Super Falcons clinched a 1-0 victory, anticipation is high for another thrilling clash between South Africa and Nigeria’s national women’s football teams.

Both sides are vying for qualification to the women’s football event at the Paris Olympic Games, scheduled to take place in a few months. The crucial match is scheduled for Tuesday at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

While the Super Falcons aim to maintain their unbeaten record against Banyana Banyana on South African soil in senior women’s football, the hosts are optimistic about their chances, especially given their status as the reigning African champions.

    Decades of Dominance
Since Nigeria’s resounding 7-1 win in a 1995 World Cup qualifier, Banyana Banyana has struggled to secure a victory over the Falcons within South Africa’s borders. Despite intensified competition over the years, Nigeria holds a significant advantage, boasting 15 wins in 24 encounters, with five draws and only four losses to South Africa.

Notable South African victories include those in Equatorial Guinea (2012 AFCON), Ghana (2018 AFCON), Nigeria (Aisha Buhari Cup), and Morocco (2022 AFCON). However, Nigeria has only drawn twice against Banyana Banyana within South Africa, in a 2004 Olympic qualifier and a 2012 friendly match.

    Confidence and Determination
The Super Falcons, arriving in Pretoria on Monday, exude confidence as they seek to end their 16-year Olympic absence. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, pivotal in Nigeria’s recent successes against Banyana Banyana, emphasized the team’s commitment to securing an Olympic berth.

Ajibade stated, “We are prepared for a tough battle. With 90 minutes standing between us and an Olympic ticket, we will give it our all. We want Nigerians to believe in us and are motivated by the desire to play in the Olympics.”

Key player Jennifer Echegini echoed this sentiment, expressing the team’s determination to succeed in Pretoria.

Coach Randy Waldrum, while acknowledging missed opportunities in the first leg, remains confident in his team’s ability to deliver. He emphasized the importance of player performance and expressed optimism about achieving their goal of reaching Paris.

With kickoff at the 51,000-capacity Loftus Versfeld Stadium scheduled for 7:30 P.M. South African time (6:30 P.M. Nigeria time), fans anticipate an electrifying encounter as both teams vie for Olympic qualification.
