Petrol Subsidy Removal: Private School Owners increase transport fares

    Published on

Following the recent removal of petrol subsidy by the federal government, private school proprietors have increased the transport fares for their students by as much as 100%. An investigation done on private schools around Suleja in Niger State showed that all schools that run the school-bus system said they were compelled to introduce the new rates due to the adverse effect of the removal of fuel subsidy.
Parents were asked to pay the difference but calculated from .the 6th week of this third term, that is 5th June, 2023.
One of the school proprietors lamented that she used to spend N150,000 per week to fuel all her school’s buses before the subsidy removal but now spent N455,000 this week alone. She said the only option available to her was to increase the fees for the school bus and pleaded with parents to bear with her. Many parents have continued to complain about this development and called on the government to quickly find solution to the problem to cushion the effects on them.
