The wrestling world mourns the loss of The Iron Sheik, Iran’s only WWE champion and a fierce rival of Hulk Hogan. On Wednesday, his team announced the passing of the legendary wrestler at the age of 81.
In a statement shared on Twitter, The Iron Sheik’s team expressed both sadness and gratitude for his peaceful departure, acknowledging the enduring legacy he leaves behind. They highlighted his remarkable journey from a small village in Iran to becoming a globally recognized figure in the wrestling industry, a testament to his unwavering determination.
Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri, born in Damghan, Iran, relocated to the United States in the 1960s and served as an assistant coach for two US Olympic teams during the 1970s. Joining the WWE in 1980, he fully embraced his character as one of the industry’s most notorious villains. His charismatic persona brought entertainment to the wrestling world during a period marked by heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran due to the Iranian hostage crisis.
Vaziri achieved great success, winning the WWE world heavyweight championship in 1983 and forming a memorable tag team with Nikola Volkoff. The duo was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005. Notably, Hulk Hogan defeated The Iron Sheik in a historic match at Madison Square Garden in 1984 to claim the world championship belt.
One of his most memorable encounters took place against Sgt Slaughter, with their match reflecting nationalistic ideologies. The Iron Sheik faced defeat in the classic Boot Camp Match at Madison Square Garden, with Slaughter emerging as the victor.
During the first Gulf War, Vaziri’s character underwent a rebranding, teaming up with Slaughter and General Adnan. However, they were defeated by Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior at the 1991 SummerSlam.
Beyond his wrestling prowess, The Iron Sheik was renowned for his catchphrases, including the creation of the word “jabroni,” a term later popularized by Dwayne Johnson. His memorable catchphrases and unforgettable moments have left an indelible mark on fans worldwide, and his influence continues to resonate in the wrestling industry today, as noted by his team.
Survived by his wife, two daughters, and five grandchildren, The Iron Sheik’s legacy will forever be cherished in the hearts of wrestling enthusiasts everywhere.
