Journalist Takes Legal Action Against Enugu Government Over Land Takeover

    Published on

Dr. Amaechi Anakwue, a senior journalist with AIT and Daar Communications Ltd, has filed a lawsuit against the Enugu State Government and others over the illegal trespass and seizure of his land in the state. Anakwue is seeking N200 million in damages for the trespass.

In the suit filed by his counsel, Ikeazor Ajovi Akariwe (SAN), Anakwue is requesting the Enugu State High Court to affirm his ownership of Plot 137 Independence Layout Phase II, Enugu, and issue a perpetual injunction restraining Offiah Lordrick M., Enugu State Government, the Attorney General of Enugu State, and the Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development from reallocating the land to another individual.

According to Anakwue’s statement of claim, the land was initially acquired by Bernard Onuigwe Orji in 2006 and granted a Certificate of Occupancy. It was later sold to Pascal Ene, who issued Anakwue a Deed of Assignment and Irrevocable Power of Attorney when he purchased the land in 2014. Anakwue alleges that he paid the necessary fees and began planning the construction on the land.

However, Anakwue’s brother discovered that Lordrick had started construction on the land without his knowledge. Anakwue’s attempts to locate the file and resolve the issue through letters to the state government were unsuccessful.

Anakwue expressed his disappointment with the land grab in Enugu State, particularly considering the calls for increased investments in the South East and the “Think Home” initiative that attracted people like him.

In response to the lawsuit, the Enugu State Commissioner for Lands, Chidi Aroh, stated that there have been no revocations of Certificates of Occupancy under his watch. He challenged Anakwue to provide details regarding the alleged revocation of the land.
