Sam Allardyce, the head coach of Leeds United, has left the club by mutual consent after an unsuccessful attempt to save them from relegation to the Championship. Allardyce took over from Javi Gracia as Leeds fought to extend their Premier League stay for a fourth consecutive season.

During Allardyce’s four-game spell as interim boss, Leeds suffered three defeats and managed one draw, ultimately sealing their relegation on the final day of the season. Allardyce had expressed his willingness to remain in charge next season to oversee Leeds’ bid for a quick return to the top flight. However, after discussions between Allardyce and the club hierarchy, Leeds have decided to part ways with the former Newcastle, Everton, and West Ham manager.

In a statement, Leeds United confirmed the mutual agreement between the club and Sam Allardyce, stating that his spell at the club would conclude following the completion of the 2022-23 season. The statement acknowledged spirited performances against Manchester City and Newcastle United but highlighted the failure to achieve the objective of staying in the Premier League.

Leeds expressed their intention to announce their new head coach in the coming weeks as they prepare for the challenges of the Championship.

After experiencing his first top-flight relegation with West Bromwich Albion in 2020-21, Allardyce had been out of football until his appointment at Leeds. His tenure at the club attracted criticism when he compared himself to renowned managers Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp during his initial press conference.

With Leeds now set for at least a season in the second tier, it remains uncertain whether Allardyce will return to coaching or conclude his long managerial career. Allardyce expressed his gratitude for managing Leeds United, a great club with a passionate fan base that he believes deserves to be in the Premier League. However, at this stage in his career, he is unsure if he can commit to the potentially long-term project ahead, but he wishes the club success and hopes they will return to the Premier League, where they belong.
