Abdulaziz Yari, a former Governor of Zamfara State, has emphasized that Nigeria’s constitution must be upheld as he seeks to contest the position of Senate Presidency.
According to Reports, the All Progressives Congress’ National Working Committee has endorsed Senator Godswill Akpabio and Jubrin Barau as the preferred candidates for Senate President and Deputy, respectively.
During a courtesy visit to the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party in Abuja on Thursday night, Yari stated that he would continue engaging with relevant stakeholders. Accompanied by Senator Osita Izunaso, a former chairman of the Senate Committees on Gas and Housing, Yari expressed concern that some individuals were utilizing religion to marginalize qualified candidates.
Yari revealed his intention to seek support from the People’s Democratic Party, Labour Party, Young People’s Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance, and the Social Democratic Party by visiting their leadership.
“The constitution is supreme to any other law. Any law that is not in tandem with the Constitution is null and void. We are very committed to the Nigerian project. We strongly believe that the Constitution is going to prevail,” Yari affirmed.
He continued by stating his determination to reach the floor of the House, where the election would take place. Recognizing the democratic nature of the process, Yari emphasized the need for such engagements.
“This is my first place of call. But I will also visit other parties; Labour Party, SDP, PDP, APGA, and YPP and seek the support of their members on this project. That is to show you that the 10th Assembly is completely different in that we know that we have 7 parties. The vote of every party counts, and it is critical to us,” Yari explained.
He concluded by affirming his commitment to the struggle until the goal is achieved, highlighting the significance of President’s commitment to govern Nigeria in accordance with the country’s constitution.
Abba Kawu-Ali, the acting national chairman of the NNPP, commended Yari’s competence and stated that he is capable of assuming the role of Senate President.
“Yari has shown his capacity as a two-term governor of Zamfara State, we are confident that when you get there you won’t fail,” Kawu-Ali remarked.
