Ahead of the new Premier League season, Arsenal, on Sunday, made an ominous statement of intent with a 3-0 victory over Manchester City that was nothing but a dismantling at the Principality Stadium
.
It took just 24 seconds for the champions to take the lead, with Ricardo Calafiori scoring the quickest goal in a Community Shield since 1968 against the FA Cup winners, and from there, they never looked back. City, without Pep Guardiola, were like Samson when Delilah cut his hair, devoid of all power.
With Bruno Guimarães making an eye-catching debut, following his £75m arrival from Newcastle United, there was steel to go with Arsenal’s skill, and his combination with Myles Lewis-Skelly dictated the tempo of the contest, allowing Martin Odegaard to flourish in front of them.
Here was a rude awakening for Elliot Anderson’s, City’s new £116m man, as he was ever so slightly off the pace in the first minute and that allowed Lewis-Skelly to slip a beautiful ball in behind the FA Cup winners’ defence and invited Calafiori to do the rest, which he did with assurance.
It should not have been the case that a goal so soon should have governed how the game progressed, but that is exactly what happened as Arsenal totally dominated. Whenever they lost possession, they recovered it as a matter of urgency.
City, by contrast, showed none of that desire and the second goal arrived when Odegaard was allowed all the time in the world to flip a ball to the back post, where another new boy Christos Tzolis was arriving. The Greek headed back into the six-yard area, and Kai Havertz did the rest in the 28th minute.
Odegaard completed the routing in the 48th minute.
”We played some brilliant football. Great performance and a great way to start the season. I always want to help the team as much possible with goals and assists. I want to score more goals.
”We showed our level today. We’re showed we’re ready. We’re serious and we want to do it again.
”We want to attack it. We want to do it again. When you get a taste of how nice it is you want to do it again. We want to win everything,” Odegaard said after the game.
