From Yarima Haruna, Birnin Kebbi
Kebbi State branch of National youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), on Friday, joined the rest of the world to demand for a tougher stand against drug addiction among youths in Kebbi State and the country.
The state Chairman of the youth in Kebbi State, Engr Ahmed Rufai Khalifa, in a statement, admonished youth in Kebbi State to abstain from hard drugs, and resist temptations to go into drug addiction and sale of same.
He noted that drug addiction is the mother of all crimes, and is responsible for the escalation of insecurity across the country, saying a youth high in hard drugs is capable of doing carnage, and can be cheaply used by non-state actors to cause mayhem in the society.
”We join to mark the day because youth forms a large percentage of the population in the country and they are ones vulnerable to drugs sales and/or addiction therefore we will not relent in raising awareness against drugs addiction.
”While we lament that a large number of youth, unfortunately, is lost to drug addiction, we remain consistent in pushing for stiffer penalties for hard drug manufacturers, sellers, and consumers.
”We commend Kebbi First Lady, Zainab Nasare Nasir Idris, for her support to youth reformatory homes and Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, for creating social safety programs that keep the youth busy ” because an idle mind is a devil workshop,” he said.
