Iyabo Obasanjo clinches Ogun Central Senatorial ticket after rejoining PDP

Former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has returned to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and emerged as the party’s candidate for Ogun Central Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo was formally received by PDP leaders and supporters at the party secretariat in Abeokuta on Wednesday, where she was presented with the party’s flag and senatorial ticket.
Addressing party faithful, Obasanjo pledged loyalty to the PDP and vowed to uphold its constitution, manifesto and code of conduct.
“I shall prioritise the welfare of the people above personal and sectional interests,” she said, adding that she would serve with integrity, humility and dedication.
Presenting the flag, Ogun State PDP Chairman, Abayomi Tella, described the move as the official endorsement of her candidacy for Ogun Central.
Tella welcomed Obasanjo back into the party, calling her a valuable member whose experience and political influence would strengthen the PDP’s chances in future elections.
PDP governorship candidate in Ogun State, Ladi Adebutu, also praised Obasanjo’s resilience and commitment, describing her as a “true daughter of Ogun State”.
Adebutu pledged that if elected governor, he would ensure full implementation of local government autonomy across the state.
It will be recalled that Obasanjo represented Ogun Central in the Senate on the PDP platform between 2007 and 2011 before relocating abroad on a political hiatus.
She re-entered active politics in January 2026 when she defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC, and sought the party’s governorship ticket. She later left the APC, citing “unfair treatment and lack of respect” within the party.
Her return to the PDP marks another major shift in her political trajectory ahead of 2027.
