‎National librarian urges Nigerian youth to embrace reading culture

    Published on

‎National Librarian and Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of Nigeria, Prof. Chinwe Anunobi, has urged Nigerian children and youth to adopt reading as a lifelong habit to unlock their potential.

‎In her Children’s Day 2026 goodwill message issued on Tuesday, Anunobi congratulated Nigerian children and described reading as a powerful tool for self-development, critical thinking and empowerment.

‎“Reading opens doors to knowledge, opportunity, and leadership,” she said. “When you read, you equip yourself with the ideas, skills, and confidence to shape your future and contribute meaningfully to our country. Let this Children’s Day remind us that every great leader, inventor, and changemaker started with a book.”

‎Anunobi said the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alongside education policies of the Minister of Education, were creating expanded opportunities for formal and non-formal learning.

‎She added that the policies were designed to ensure every Nigerian child, regardless of background or location, has access to quality education and support to pursue their dreams.

‎The National Librarian encouraged young people to take advantage of platforms provided by the National Library of Nigeria, including its nationwide network of book clubs, literacy centers, and physical and digital resources.

‎She stressed the importance of reading materials on Nigeria’s history, culture, languages, personalities and achievements so youths can understand their heritage and be equipped for life’s journey.

‎“The National Library of Nigeria remains committed to being a safe, accessible, and inspiring space for learning. Through our centers and digital platforms, we are bringing books, knowledge, and opportunities closer to you. I urge you to visit us, join a book club, and read widely, especially Nigerian content that tells your story,” Anunobi said.

‎She reaffirmed the Library’s mandate to promote reading culture and lifelong learning nationwide, in line with national development goals and its 2025-2030 strategic plan.

‎“Let us work together to help you achieve your potentials, some of which strategies are hidden in pages of the book,” she added.
