A notorious bandit kingpin, Kachallah Auwalu, has been killed during a violent clash between rival armed groups in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The development is the latest in a series of deadly confrontations among criminal gangs operating within forest corridors in the state.

According to a renowned counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, the incident occurred on Saturday at about 4:35 pm in the Maganda area.

The forested corridor has long been linked to recurring armed group activities and is considered a stronghold for bandits.

Quoting security sources, the publication reported that Auwalu was a prominent figure within one of the armed factions, wielding significant influence across the Maganda, Kuyello, and Dogon Dawa axis.

Makama stated that the clash was part of an ongoing internal confrontation between rival groups, a trend that has intensified in recent months within forest communities.

The report added that another faction, allegedly led by a notorious bandit leader, Dogo Gide, was mobilising towards the scene at the time of the incident.

Casualties were said to have been recorded on both sides, although exact figures remain unconfirmed as of press time.

In response to the escalating violence, troops under Sector 1 of Operation Fansan Yamma have been placed on alert to closely monitor the situation and prevent further breakdown of security.

The publication noted that surveillance and intelligence-driven operations have been intensified across Birnin Gwari and neighbouring communities.

Security agencies are said to be working to stabilise the area and curb the activities of armed groups operating within the forests.

The incident comes amid growing concerns over the proliferation of armed groups and a resurgence of bandit attacks in parts of the country, particularly in the North-West.

Residents in affected communities have continued to express fears over their safety as rival factions engage in violent supremacy battles.

In a related development, another notorious bandit leader, Dogo Isah, was reportedly killed during a violent clash with a rival faction in Kaduna State.

Isah, who was known for orchestrating high-profile attacks and terrorising residents in Kachia and parts of Kajuru Local Government Area, was said to have died during a confrontation over cattle rustling in Kachia forest on January 7, 2025.
